Welcome to the MechEng file archive, a public service of the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers. This document will....
Describe what MechEng is all about
Where to find files
Where to send files
Disclaimers, etc.
------------- WHAT IS MECHENG? ----------------
The MechEng archive contains 5000+ programs with a particular focus on
scientific and technical subjects. The majority of the programs are for
the IBM-PC architecture but there are files for Amiga, Macintosh, and UNIX
programs.
The MechEng archive originated with the MechEng BBS, a free public service
of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The BBS has been
in operation since 1987, offering Usenet news, free Email, listserv
services, and access to the MechEng archive through a standard BBS format,
answering at (608) 233-3378. The archive is also available through the
MechEng Web site (http://www.mecheng.asme.org), an FTP site
(ftp://ftp.mecheng.asme.org/pub), and on CDROM. All access points offer
the same collection. For questions regarding the archive contact
jackson@mecheng.asme.org.
------------- WHERE CAN YOU FIND THE FILES? ----------------
ON THE FTP SITE: (ftp.mecheng.asme.org/pub)
Under the PUB directory, there are a number of subdirectories. Within each
subdirectory there is a ASCII file named !FILES which contains the name,
size, date, and short description of each of the files in that directory.
Subdirectory categories are implied by their name. Look into the !FILES
listings to get a better idea of the subjects.
ON THE WEB SITE: (http://www.mecheng.asme.org)
The home page contains documentation on how to find files. Refer to that
documentation directly.
ON THE CDROM DISC: (Walnut Creek at http://www.cdrom.com)
If you already have the disc, look to other README files or run the
VIEW.EXE program directly from the root directory of the disc.
ON THE BBS: (call 608-233-3378 directly)
After completing the login and registration procedure, use the F(iles)
command from the main menu to view the file listings and select items for
downloading.
------------- WHERE CAN YOU SEND FILES? ----------------
The MechEng archive is probably the largest collection of engineering
shareware in the world and has been in operation since 1987. If you have
software you would like to share with the engineering community at large,
there may be no better place. The preferred method for submissions is an
upload to the FTP site at ftp.mecheng.asme.org\pub\newin. Files also need
to be registered on the description database which is available at
http://www.mecheng.asme.org/welcome.html. Submissions are best made in
the ZIP file format and should include a FILE_ID.DIZ file description.
A complete description of the DIZ format is available as FILEID.ZIP in the
MechEng archive, as well as most other shareware archives.
------------- DISCLAIMERS AND OTHER INFO ----------------
Every file in the MechEng has been scanned for virus software, reviewed
for copyright, and generally faulty operation. Never the less, there are
no warranties stated or implied for any of the software or data contained
within the MechEng archive. ASME, and the operator(s) of the MechEng
system assume no responsibility, direct, consequential, or incidental, for
either the software or information contained within the MechEng archive.
It is possible for a program to damage data integrity or destroy computer
circuitry. Results of analysis or design programs can produce misleading
conclusions, leading to unsafe, unreliable, or unstable engineered systems.
Users of software are responsible to copyright owners for legal and
ethical use of software products. Free access to software in no way
implies free software. Please respect the intellectual property of
shareware authors by registering software as required by the individual
guidelines included with each shareware program.
If you find files within the MechEng archive which are not suitable for
public distribution, please contact jackson@mecheng.asme.org.
